Gabrielle Chanel

There are few fragrances on the market that can rival that of Chanel's No.5. The iconic perfume sells every 30 seconds, according to the French government, and rakes in an incredible $100 million per year. But when 'Gabrielle Chanel' thrusted its sophisticated, golden, boxy self in front of our eyes, it seemed there actually could be something just as successful.

Balayage Round Two.

I was a little naughty last week and treated myself to a pamper session at Radio Hair Salon, Shoreditch to have my hair in balayage once again. It had been eight months since I last had it done for my birthday, so I guess you could say my hair much deserved a little treat (although, quite a hefty one). I absolutely adored it last time round; the blonde tones really complimented my skin, eyes and natural hair color. Moreover, it just really lifted my usual mousy-brown locks, making them look more expensive, luxurious and 'beachy'. With the blonde fading day by day with the summer sun disappearing, I knew I had to get it done again.

Bloggers I'm Loving Lately...

Photos courtesy of EJ Style
This is a recent blog discovery and I blame Emma's very enviable Instagram for making me stumble upon it. Emma Hill is the blogger behind the very successful blog EJ Style, which is on all things fashion. Initially founded as an "outlet to express [her] passion and love of fashion", it is now a full time business and an influential blog worldwide. It also happens to be one of my all time favourite blogs, albeit I have only been reading it for several weeks. Hill's style is incredibly chic, minimalistic and cool. Perhaps her blog is my favourite since we both share a penchant for denim, but her love of the high-street makes her looks approachable, down to earth and accessible too.

My Top Tips for Getting Balayage

A few weeks later and I'm still over the moon with how amazing my hair looks and feels, thanks to the lovely team at Radio Salon in Shoreditch. Before I had my appointment, I made sure to conduct extensive research of what exactly I was paying mega bucks for, and of course, what colour would suit me best and whether balayage was suitable for my hair type. So, if you're also considering getting balayage, I'm here to share with you all not only top tips for the treatment, but also my experience.

What's On My Face #29:

These pictures may of been taken a little while ago (hence why my hair is not blonde!), but I've been sporting this look rather a lot lately. With spring officially in full swing here in London, the corals, peaches and orangey tones have been ubiquitous on my lips and cheeks. There's just something so fresh, uplifting and warming about these summery shades - perhaps even more so against pale skin that is longing for some summer sun. But hey - not long! For the meantime, we can kid ourselves that summer is virtually tomorrow by continuously sporting bright, coral colours and subtle swathes of bronzer.

And that's exactly what the incredible technician Sarah at Radio gave me. I'm unbelievably thrilled with the finished look, but first let's jump right to the start of the day...

Top Winter Skin Saviors

Blogmas: Day Sixteen

Winter is probably my least favourite mont.- it's rainy, cold, windy and miserably grey. My skin would definitely agree. The cold weather can really take its toll on the skin by drying it out, making it appear dull and just generally feeling run down, so a good pamper is always in order. I’ve put together a few of my favourite skincare products that have helped tackle any dry, dull and damaged skin this winter, and I hope these picks can help if your skin is in need of some TLC too.

Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask (£23) - a very rich cream which sinks in so quickly and leaves my skin feeling incredibly soft and smooth the next day. A little goes a long way so the investment really is worth it in my eyes. Packed full of Avocado Oil and Apricot Kernel Oil, it smells amazing too!

Nuxe Comforting Cleansing Milk (£14) - I often find moisturising cleansers not particularly clarifying or cleansing however, that's not the case for this one. I've repurchased this cleanser so may times as I love it that much. This rose-scented cleanser has a rich, smooth and comfortable texture that perfectly cleanses, removes make-up and protects the skin from dryness with a non-oily finish. Skin is left supple and comfortable.

Kiehl's Avocado Creamy Eye Treatment (£20) - A luxuriously thick and rich eye cream, packed full of Avocado cream and other goodies that our skin loves. Whilst this treatment is highly concentrated and has a thick texture, it is still very light and waters down when tapped in - making it perfect for the delicate under-eye area.

St. Ives Invigorating Scrub (£4.19) - Skin can become so dull and tired in winter so it's crucial that a good exfoliator is at hand. This scrub sloughs away dead skin cells to reveal naturally beautiful and healthy looking skin. The deep cleansing formula gently exfoliates, removing dull, dead skin cells. Skin is left smooth, radiant and healthy.

Origins GinZing Moisturiser (£24) - a gel-like moisturiser that although probably best used in summer for its light texture and fresh feel, provides the radiance and glow skin lacks of in winter. This lightweight, oil-free moisturiser is fortified with skin-boosters like Panax Ginseng and Coffee Bean. It instantly hydrates and revs up radiance. Lacklustre-looking skin is rapidly refreshed and revitalised to create a healthy, vibrant glow.

Origins High-Potency Night-A-Mins (£35) - a thick, creamy and ultra luxurious overnight cream that smells good enough to eat. The cream is packed full with natural goodness such as vitamins C, E & H, minerals and moisture-rich replenishers. While relaxing aromas lull you to sleep, skin sloughs away dry, dead layers and eradicates the appearance of dullness to wake up looking radiant & refreshed.

The Winter Mani

Blogmas: Day Eleven

Our hands can become so dry in winter that they somewhat resemble prunes, and our nails turn brittle and chipped. But nothing that a little at-home mani can't fix! Time to buff, shape, oil up and paint away. Things will look salon fresh within just a few minutes.

  1. Prep - Before I apply nail varnish, I like to remove any previous colour with Bourjois 1 Seconde Magic Polish Remover. Then it's time to grab the tools; a quick buff and file using the Soap & Glory Nail File is all I need to get my nails back in to tip top shape. This provides a nice base for fresh polish. To hydrate and repair cuticles, I turn to O.P.I Cuticle Oil I only apply this oil as and when I need to.
  2. Base - I always think the perfect mani begins with a perfect base. I personally use the Essie Prep 'n' Perfect kit. The Grow Stronger base coat strengthens weak nails, whilst the Good to Go topcoat provides a beautiful glossy finish.
  3. Paint - Go for whatever seasonal colour you wish. I love wearing reds and burgundys on my nails during colder months and I'm currently wearing Essie Red Nouveau - a stunning crimson red.
  4. Lotion - Finish it all off by giving yourself a little hand massage. Put some hand cream into your hands and thoroughly massage it in, pushing your fingers into your palms for a relaxing feel.

What nail colour do you love wearing in the winter?

Winter Woes: Tips For Keeping Hair Frizz-Free

My hair in winter is a topic I usually wish to avoid to speak about; it's that bad. Picture this: a huge, uncontrollable, frizzy, tangly, curly mess. The early morning mist may be great for photography or creating the perfect setting in a novel, but for my hair, certainly not. The extreme mix of heat tools and hot showers with cold, windy air is not a good combination. However, below are a few products alongside trusty tips and tricks I swear by to prevent my hair getting too unruly...

  1. Oil - Always my go-to product for banishing dry, frizzy and tangly hair. The Lee Stafford Argan Oil is my hair bible when it comes to frizziness, and is a product that I've used for over four years now. I genuinely believe this product is under-hyped as in my eyes, it's the best oil out there.
  2. Hydrating products - The cold, damp, winter air can sap all the moisture out of hair so hydrating products are a must-have. Personally, I use the L'Oréal Hair Expertise Everstrong Shampoo to strengthen and repair my thin, dry hair and then either the L'Oréal Hair Expertise Replenishing and Taming or Super Sleek Smoothing and Taming Conditioner. I highly recommend this range as the products are extremely effective, luxurious and at affordable prices.
  3. Use less heat, in an effective way - During winter, I let my hair air-dry (as if I was to straighten or blow-dry it, it would still be curly/ wavy in the morning) and then after applying oil, I will lightly straighten the underneath sections. The underneath of my hair tends to be more curly and frizzy than the rest as it's thinner there. All in all, I find this an effective way of keeping my hair frizz-free and tame without completely drying it out and damaging it further.
  4. Straighten naturally - A great way of using even less heat or ditching the straighteners completely is to use products that straighten hair. I love using the Tresemmé Keratin Smooth 7 Day Treatment. In all honesty, this product doesn't last seven days so don't be fooled by that, however, it is a great product that will keep hair straight, sleek and smooth for a few days. The Keratin Smooth range is one that I highly recommended.
  5. Keep brushing to a minimum - Brushing hair makes it 100x frizzier. Keep brushing to a minimum, and if hair feels tangly or knotty, either use fingers or a tangle teezer.
  6. Tuck hair into a scarf or coat - This is my last resort! To keep my hair from getting insanely out of control, I'll tuck it into my coat or scarf and it will keep silky smooth and frizz-free.

A Wave Goodbye To Acne, For Good

Until a few months ago, my acne was getting worse and worse. It was probably the worst I had ever seen it. I was getting spots on parts of my face that I never used to, and it was spreading on my back. Prior to this, I had already visited the doctor about my skin; they prescribed me a tablet that just didn't work for me. My skin was irritated, dry and flaky. So when it began getting worse I decided another trip to the doctors was needed. And finally my skincare prayers were answered.

I was prescribed the anti-biotic Lymecycline. Rather annoyingly, this capsule takes roughly two months (of one tablet everyday) to start seeing results. At first, I was really frustrated - I just kept thinking that once again these weren't working. However after the two months I began to realise that I wasn't getting any new spots. I still had bad scarring and a couple of hormonal spots but it was definetly an improvement.

Today, I still get the occasional hormonal spot around the chin or jawline, however, it is nowhere near as bad as it used to be and for the first time in three years, I can finally say I'm happy and proud of my skin. My scarring, or for the proper term, post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation, is still relatively bad, however due to the tablets and a good skincare regimen, I can already see it fading.

Along with the anti-biotics, I made sure to keep my skincare routine as natural and simple as possible. I used the Nuxe Rose Comforting Cleansing Milk and Embryolisse Lait-Creme Moisturiser every day and night and they worked a miracle. The cleanser soothes, hydrates and repairs skin while banishing any excess oil or dirt. The moisturiser is deeply hydrating but not sticky or tacky. I can't recommend these products enough - particularly if you have combination skin too.

I am in no shape or form a skincare expert and I understand that everyone's skin is different. Therefore, don't take my advice too seriously, although this all worked for me, it may not for everyone. Additionally, be sure to always check with a doctor/ GP/ dermatologist before taking any medication.

If you have any comments or questions then feel free to tweet, email or leave me a comment below! Hope you all had a great week!

What's On My Face #25:

I feel like autumn is finally in full bloom; every leaf has turned into a rich, jewel tone, pumpkin spice lattés are ubiquitous and thick, wooly scarves line the necks of semi-freezing people. And of course, I'm seen in every autumnal shade possible; today I'm sporting forest green and bright pink/ plum. To compliment these colours I kept my makeup fresh and natural, with the pop of colour for the lips. Without further ado, let's get to the products...

BURBERRY SS16 MAKEUP TUTORIAL (DRUGSTORE EDITION)

I always adore the makeup Wendy Rowe, Burberry's Artistic Consultant, creates for the shows. The looks always compliment the outfits, without overpowering or ruining the aesthetic. This year, it was all about the lip. Incorporating Burberry’s iconic Oxblood shade, Rowe turned towards “honest” make-up, for the confident, British girl. The lady who reaches into her backpack and pulls out a dark red lipstick and applies it in her own way. It is wearable, not entirely perfect, soft around the edges, refined but not precise. The way that every normal woman would wear it. The dark lip just provides the “embellishment for the face.” Many people considered the makeup (and indeed the collection) to be rather autumnal, but in London summer never really arrives!

All in all, the makeup was simply stunning and recreating their looks has somewhat become a theme of mine. Take a look at previous Burberry makeup tutorials I've created here. As per usual, I've offered drugstore alternatives to the actual products used, making this look accessible to everyone. Without further ado, here's the look!

www.inthefrow.com
The look began with cream contouring, before any foundation or concealer. This is because Rowe wanted the makeup to be as natural and fresh as possible. However, I was wearing a little foundation before I began as I was using powder to contour. I used Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation.

In the Sephora Livestream of the makeup, Rowe stated that "the skin was all about highlight and shadows falling in to the shape of your face". To contour, I used Benefit Hoola Bronzer, blending in thoroughly and buffing with what was left on my foundation brush. This gave definition and structure to the face.

To further enhance "the art of glow and shadow" as stated by Rowe, was to highlight. Here I'm using Benefit High Beam. This pearlescent liquid highlighter provides the perfect dewy glow to cheekbones, without being obvious or unatural. Pop this down the center of the nose, cupid's bow, cheekbones and on the tear-ducts.

The face was very open this year - a first for Burberry. The usual 'Burberry Girl' is very mysterious and cool, usually hiding behind her bedhead hair. The hair stylists pushed the hair behind the ear for an open, youthful and confident appeal which related to both the makeup and the clothing designs.

Next, Rowe applied foundation. However as I previously mentioned, I already applied mine.

Then, it was time for concealer. I used the Maybelline Age Eraser to cover any dark circles and blemishes.

A nude eyesadow was applied on the eyes. I used M.A.C Eyeshadow in Omega and sweeped this all over the eyelid. Wendy stated this natural shadowing gave a "slightly androgynous" appeal to the makeup. Be sure to blend this under the eye for a 'lived-in' feel.

Mascara was not used for the show as the focus was on the lip. However, Wendy did use the product in the Sephora tutorial and confessed that "I know loads of ladies like mascara". On reflection, I wish I hadn't of used mascara as I feel this gave a more modern approach, however when creating the look I wanted it to be as wearable as possible. I used Benefit Roller Lash. As you can tell, I'm really loving Benefit makeup lately!

Time to groom the brows. These were kept, once again, very natural. Wendy advises that "the eyebrow shouldn't be solid, you should be able to see the skin underneath". Therefore, apply your chosen brow product in light feathery strokes. I used Soap & Glory Archery Pencil.

Now for the star of the show: the lips. Many of the models had a nude lip, so if you wanted, you can stop the tutorial here. However, Wendy said that the oxblood lip was applied on some models as the Burberry Girl "might've been out all day; she's going to a concert at night with her backpack and she pulls out a lipstick and pops it on". Effortless, confident and nonchalant.

The bold lip, the embellishment of the makeup, related to the heavily embellished designs used in the collection, therefore mirroring and complimenting one another.

Rowe used the Burberry Lip Liner in Oxblood to line the lips; however, I didn't have a lipliner in this shade so I went straight in with the Clinique Chubby Stick in Grandest Grape. This product is slightly more plummy in shade to the colour Burberry used, which was deeper and more brown-toned. Nonetheless, it still works perfectly. I also swiped on a little of M.A.C Lipstick in Plumful for an extra glossy finish.

The oxblood is an iconic Burberry shade; first featuring in their scarves and in the lining of the trench coats alongside the beige and black. Rowe says that the dark lip was "Gothic, but in a modern way" which related to the "musical influences" of early Britain. Burberry is always influenced by music, with musical accompaniments performing every season.

The lipstick was blended and smudged around the edges with a cotton bud/ Q-tip. This made the lip easier to wear, and created a soft, lived-in feel as opposed to a dark lip conventionally appearing strict, harsh or mean.

I highly recommend watching the Sephora Livestream of the makeup, which was filmed live straight after the runway show.
